Is Big Tech the new Standard Oil? Or does regulating the digital economy mean stifling some of the most successful engines of human progress in the 21st Century?
It is one issue that has catapulted antitrust enforcement into the public eye more than ever before. What are the unique problems that digital platforms present for competition regulators? And what might be the right remedies to use when facing those issues? Ahead of our panel discussion, we’ve written a paper highlighting two of the main questions that will test the panel and face us all when we think about how competition law – or economics regulation in general – should be applied in the digital world.
Our panel includes Dave Foster, Director in our competition practice, joined by Ludwig Siegele, Technology Editor at The Economist who has written extensively on the need to rethink antitrust enforcement for the Tech Titans and the digital economy to debate this issue along with Massimiliano Kadar, Deputy head of Unit C.1 at the Directorate General for Competition of the European Commission. The session will be chaired by Dr. Sven Völcker, Co-chair of Latham & Watkins’ global Antitrust and Competition Practice.
