Christoph Riechmann

Christoph is a Director in the Energy Practice and also heads the offices in Berlin and Cologne.

He provides regulation, competition, transaction related advice and dispute support predominantly to energy sector clients across Europe. He regularly acts as expert in public hearings and court proceedings. Within Frontier he is also responsible for the integration of the European Frontier offices.

Christoph has over 20 years of consulting experience in the energy sector where he has advised a number of leading energy organisations. This includes major and medium sized European energy companies (including E.ON, Engie, RWE, Verbund) and industry associations in a host of European countries. Christoph also advises a variety of public offices, including the European Commission, and energy authorities in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxemburg (BNetzA, E-Control, ACM, BFE/Elcom, CREG and ILR, respectively) and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs (BMWi).

Christoph also has regulation and competition experience in sectors such as transport, post, telecoms, chemicals and consumer durables.

Christoph holds a Doctoral Degree in Economics from Cologne University and Economics degrees from Glasgow University and Justus-Liebig-University Giessen/Germany.



Christoph's competition experience relates to mergers, analysis of conduct/abuse, vertical agreements, cartels and cartel damages, rTPA exemption and state aid.

He regularly works with leading European law firms on competition and private enforcement cases. He has also provided competition and regulation advice across other sectors such as Post, Telecoms, Special Chemicals and Consumer Durables.

Selected cases have involved:

  • Veba/Viag, Verbund/EnergieAllianz, E.ON/Ruhrgas, RWE/Essent mergers,
  • German electricity wholesale enquiry,
  • German “CO2-investigation” (into pricing of power post EU emission trading);
  • Competition analysis in the course of civil actions on abuse of market power and adjustment of vertical contracts;
  • Alstom procedure (on state aid);
  • Advice on TPA exemptions for infrastructure projects like OPAL, Gazelle and NorGer.


Christoph advises clients on energy regulation issues across Europe. He has helped shape the development of regulatory arrangements for energy networks through both client work for regulators and regulated companies, and published academic work. Christoph also advises companies and investors on utility regulation in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Rep of Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the Middle East. Christoph has also provided regulation advice in the transport, post and telecoms sectors.

His advice includes advising on:

  • incentive design for cost reduction and quality of service;
  • efficiency benchmarking;
  • risk and cost of capital assessments;
  • cost modelling (including marginal and average long run incremental cost assessments);
  • financeability assessment;
  • tariff design.

Dispute support

Christoph advises clients on litigation and contract dispute cases across Europe. He has acted as expert witness and has appeared in public hearings and arbitral hearings in Germany, Austria and in ICC cases in a number of countries.

Recent dispute support work that Christoph has led on includes

  • price reviews in gas supply and gas storage contracts;
  • private enforcement of competition law in relation to long-term energy supply agreements;
  • assessments of damage claims relating to power purchase agreements.
