Every day at an A&E is different. A&Es in different parts of the country will encounter different numbers and types of patients. Factors such as weather and provision of other services locally play a role in whether patients end up at an A&E or not. Apart from informal predictions about winter being “tough” and a few predictable event-related activity spikes, there might seem little that can be done to predict A&E activity.
Not so. We analysed A&E activity data – admissions and attendances – for the past five years and found that it is more predictable than you might think. We have developed an A&E calendar which could help trusts and commissioners prepare for the likely peaks and troughs. Explore this site to find out more.
